Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective and time-tested therapeutic system for many health conditions and ailments. Its origins can be traced back more than 3000 years to East Asia. Even with its rich history, western researchers are just starting to understand the mechanism of how acupuncture works. Numerous clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating numerous health conditions, but the how and why largely remain a mystery to most modern researchers. But results are what matter today!

The practice of acupuncture involves the use of ultra thin sterile single-use surgical steel needles, most of them as thin as a strand of hair. The needles are then inserted in various points throughout the body depending on the health condition being treated. The needles are used to elicit a therapeutic effect, which helps the body return to homeostasis and heal itself.

Acupuncture is most effective when done progressively in a series of treatments, meaning that a person receiving acupuncture will feel the benefits being enhanced with each passing treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture should not be painful, but there are some sensations that are generated and actually encouraged during an acupuncture treatment. A person may have a feeling of achiness, soreness, fullness, pressure, numbness, or tingling. But most people receiving acupuncture report feelings of deep relaxation and calm, don't be surprised if people fall asleep during the treatment.

What should a person look for when searching for an acupuncturist?

  • The acupuncturist is licensed in the state
  • Studied in an accredited acupuncture school
  • The acupuncturist holds NCCAOM Certification
