Low-level laser therapy is a great option to add to acupuncture treatments. Treatment is administered via a therapeutic cold laser, which means that it is essentially painless with no trauma to the skin and other underlying tissues.
So what are the benefits of getting laser therapy treatments?
So how does laser therapy work?
According to the WALT (World Association for photobiomoduLation Therapy), laser acupuncture can be defined as the "Photonic stimulation of acupuncture points and areas to initiate therapeutic effects similar to that of needle acupuncture and related therapies together with the benefits of PhotoBioModulation or PBM".
Photobiomodulation therapy or LLLT (Low-Level Laser Therapy) is a form of therapy that utilizes non-ionizing light sources to create a therapeutic effect. Cytochrome C oxidase proteins in the cell mitochondria absorb the light photons from the laser. This in turn increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the mitochondria. With the increase of ATP in the cells, there is a biochemical cascade of events that aid in regulation of multiple body processes, including signal transfer in nerves and gene expression.
Is laser therapy safe?
When performed by a trained professional with the proper equipment, laser therapy is extremely safe with relatively no risks. The class of laser used for laser acupuncture will not damage or affect the skin in any way. The type of energy created by cold lasers are non-ionizing radiation, which is perfectly safe and does not create any damaging radiation. We only use FDA-cleared laser equipment.
We treat the following conditions with laser therapy in conjunction with acupuncture:
