How does laser therapy work?

According to the WALT (World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy), laser acupuncture can be defined as the "Photonic stimulation of acupuncture points and areas to initiate therapeutic effects similar to that of needle acupuncture, along with the benefits of Photobiomodulation or PBM."

Photobiomodulation therapy, also known as Low-Level Laser Therapy, utilizes non-ionizing light sources to produce a therapeutic effect. The cytochrome C oxidase proteins in cell mitochondria absorb light photons from the laser, which increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in the mitochondria. This increase in ATP triggers a biochemical cascade that helps regulate various body processes, including nerve signal transfer and gene expression.
