Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a debilitating condition in which there is damage to the peripheral nervous system. This damage disrupts the nerve signaling between the central nervous system and the peripheral nerves, and causes uncomfortable and unwanted symptoms, occurring mostly in the extremities such as the arms, hands, legs, and feet.

Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Sharp, throbbing, or burning pain
  • Feeling of numbness and or tingling in the extremities
  • Cramps and muscle twitching
  • Pain during normal activities
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness
  • Paralysis of motor nerves
  • Intolerance to heat
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Urinary and digestive issues
  • Lightheadedness and/or blood pressure issues

The most common causes of peripheral neuropathy include:

  • Diabetes
  • Chemotherapeutic agents
  • Infections
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Trauma and injuries
  • Medications and poison
  • Vascular disorders
  • Inherited disorders

The 3 most common types of peripheral neuropathy that we see in our clinic are:

  • Diabetic Polyneuropathy
  • CIPN (Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy)
  • Idiopathic Polyneuropathy (Unknown Causes)

Multiple studies show that acupuncture is a safe therapy with no known adverse

effects in treating Peripheral Neuropathy. Acupuncture can help reduce the symptoms of neuropathy by improving systemic and targeted blood circulation, relieving pain, and inducing neuroregeneration.
