A trigger point is defined as a hyperirritable spot, a palpable nodule in the taut bands of the skeletal muscles' fascia. When pressed upon, these trigger points will elicit a localized pain, or a referred pain away from the spot. The condition caused by one or more trigger points is called myofascial pain syndrome.
